I love Seafair in Seattle. I grew up in Seattle and, luckily, my family also loved the Hydros. As a young girl, we would always, always go to “Hydro Sunday”–spending the day sitting on the beach, having a picnic and generally just sharing in the giddy chaos that surrounded the event.
SOOOO much fun.
The Hydroplane races on Lake Washington are now big business and the fun isn’t quite as innocent. Now you have to buy tickets to sit beachside. (what’s WITH that, anyway!) So now I spend my Hydro Sunday watching the races on the Tube. We BBQ at home and, when possible, have a few friends over. Still fun, but not being there in person, running in and out of the water and playing on the beach, isn’t quite the same.
However! The Hydros are Running on the Lake this weekend and even waaay out here in Auburn, I can usually hear them if everything is just right! Soooooooooo coooooooooollllllll!
We’ll take a moment, I hope, to drive down close the area to see the Blue Angels perform during half time–maybe we can catch them on one of their training runs–which, to me, is every bit as exciting. I’m enthralled every single time and I’ve seen them for years and years and years.
If you’ve never experienced the Seafair Hydro insanity … go Go GO!! You’ll love it!
Oh!, the basics: Hydros run on Lake Washington this coming weekend: August 6-8. Go here for more info and to buy tickets.
